Gurnee Decideds to Treat, Rather Than Remove, Infected Ashes
When they learned last year that a deadly pest had infested Gurnee’s ash trees, officials looked at the bottom line and decided treatment was not only a viable option but also the most cost-effective. The emerald ash borer beetles had likely been in Gurnee five or six years before January 2011, when the U.S. Department of Agriculture officially informed the village it was infested, said Jake Balmes, streets supervisor.
