Repopulating the Giants: Update
We previously introduced many of you to Archangel Ancient Tree Archives of Michigan. Our own Joe Aiken, took a road trip with Jason Kappen and Team Bartlett, joining this group on a mission to obtain new growth tissue from large old-growth redwood and sequoias in California. Along with a number of phenomenal climbers from around the country, Joe shared his experience with us last year. As May marks the 1 year anniversary of his incredible journey, we thought it would be a great opportunity for an update.
The team has successfully propagated these samples and they are taking on an international flair. These cuttings are being transplanted to the U.S. West Coast, Germany, Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom. A few Sequoias are even doing well right here in Michigan.
Archangel’s mission is to propagate the world’s most important old-growth trees before they are gone. They hope to reforest the earth with the offspring and to archive the genetics of ancient trees in living libraries around the world for the future.
Outstanding job! We hope to have even more updates as this incredible project continues to take root!
