Earlier this month Arborjet attended the treatment of the oldest ash tree in North Andover, Massachusetts by Downer Brothers Landscaping, Inc. The historic tree was injected with TREE-äge® Insecticide to protect it from the deadly Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).
Who are the Downer Bros?
Downer Brothers Landscaping, Inc. began in the early 80’s as a small neighborhood lawn mowing business operated by young brothers Chris and Chad Downer. In time, Chad moved on to other ventures, while Chris continued to achieve his goal of growing Downer Brothers Landscaping, Inc. into an industry leader. Now, nearly 30 years later, Downer Brothers is run by Chris and his wife Nicole. Their business has distinguished itself as a leading area design/build/maintenance firm with a passion for solving problems and saving trees.
Saving The Oldest Ash Tree in North Andover
The mammoth ash they are protecting has been certified by the North Andover Historical Society as the Oldest Ash Tree in North Andover.
Nicole Downer spoke to the importance of saving the ash: “The homeowners are very proud of this tree, which also functions as a play space for their children with a tire swing and a rope swing. The owners of this property appreciate the emotional cost of losing this tree as well as a huge financial and landscape loss as well. They are concerned about this tree now that EAB is in North Andover and wanted to do a preventative treatment.”
EAB in Essex County
Emerald Ash Borer was detected in North Andover on November 15, 2013 and confirmed by federal officials one week later. This is just the second detection of EAB in Massachusetts and the first beyond the western portion of the state. The first EAB detection in Massachusetts occurred in 2012 in Dalton, a small Berkshire County town near New York. EAB has been detected in 22 states across the country.
