Saving The Oldest Ash Tree in North Andover

The mammoth ash they are protecting has been certified by the North Andover Historical Society as the Oldest Ash Tree in North Andover.

Nicole Downer spoke to the importance of saving the ash: “The homeowners are very proud of this tree, which also functions as a play space for their children with a tire swing and a rope swing. The owners of this property appreciate the emotional cost of losing this tree as well as a huge financial and landscape loss as well. They are concerned about this tree now that EAB is in North Andover and wanted to do a preventative treatment.”

EAB in Essex County

Emerald Ash Borer was detected in North Andover on November 15, 2013 and confirmed by federal officials one week later. This is just the second detection of EAB in Massachusetts and the first beyond the western portion of the state. The first EAB detection in Massachusetts occurred in 2012 in Dalton, a small Berkshire County town near New York. EAB has been detected in 22 states across the country.
